This free glass painting pattern for hand painted wine glasses can easily be adapted to other surfaces, paints and colors.

Feel free to reduce or enlarge the line drawing (which appears at the bottom of this page) to suit your needs.

You can then use the pattern by cutting it and taping it to the inside of the glass as a guide. But do go ahead and free hand if that’s what you prefer. Hand painted wine glasses look great when the design is loose.

Supplies

PermEnamel Surface Conditioner

Delta – Permenamels in Ultra White, True Green, Light Foliage Green, Burnt Sienna, Royal Purple, Blue Bayou

PermEnamel Thinner (optional)

PermEnamel Gloss Glaze

Scotch Brand Magic Tape

Palette paper or waxed paper

Cheap cotton swabs (they work better). The good ones are too fluffy.

Brushes

 #1 Liner

#4 filbert

#8 flat

Because no water is used with these paints, a tiny bit of PermEnamel Thinner helps to moisten the brush and to thin the paint down slightly.

After washing and drying the glasses, apply Step 1 PermEnamel Surface Conditioner.

taped wine glassThe first step in doing hand painted wine glasses is to start by taping off about a ¾-inch from the rim of each wine glass.

CHECKER PATTERN:Use the #8 Flat loaded in True Green. Blend it well on your palette so there are no ridges or blobs. Carefully paint the checks, making sure the paint is blended well each time you re-load the brush.

VINES: The intertwining vines are painted with the liner loaded in Burnt Sienna. A little more thinner may be required. Hold the glass by the stem to make this line work easier.

If you press down, then gradually release the pressure with a 1/4 turn of the wrist to end on the chisel edge of the brush, it will make a leaf-like shape.

Notice how quickly your hand painted wine glasses project is going from ho-hum to razzle-dazzle?

BERRIES:Next, dip one end of a cotton swab into both Royal Purple and Blue Bayou to create the berries. It's best to test this several times by pressing down on palette paper. This helps to saturate the swab with paint and also lets you practice. When you like the test results, stamp the berries randomly along the vines.

Using a stylus or the handle of a fine brush, add a dot of White to each green check, and each berry for a highlight. Then add random clusters of dots around the vines.

When the paint has cured for the necessary 10 days, add a coat of PermEnamel Gloss Glaze. Your hand painted wine glasses are ready to toast any occasion!
